1:1 Technology Program

CCH will transition to a 1:1 technology platform, with initial steps occurring during the 2016-17 school year and a complete implementation with personal devices mandatory for all students in grades 9-11 (seniors optional) for the 2017-18 school year (and grades 9-12 by 2018-19).

A 1:1 technology program is one in which each student will have a portable device to use each day, and teachers will integrate these tools into their curriculum strategies. We believe the steady and consistent implementation of a 1:1 device program will benefit our educational process and outcomes in many ways, and provide our students with important skills that are fundamental in most university level environments and workplaces today.

Below is more information which we will add to as details are finalized.

AN INFO MEETING REGARDING the selected device, pricing and the ordering process will TAKE PLACE ON WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9 6-7 PM IN THE GYM. The ordering portal is now open and will remain available UNTIL MAY 2017.

Overview

Objectives for 2016-17

The objectives and plans for 2016-17 include:

  • Prepare teachers to lead effectively in a 1:1 environment:
    • Select teachers across multiple academic departments will “pilot” usage in their classes, utilizing tablet carts.
    • Monthly training sessions for all teachers will occur to demonstrate applications and build skills.
  • Prepare students to learn effectively in a 1:1 environment:
    • Provide “Digital Citizenship” instruction.
    • Integrate other training for various applications (e.g., Canvas Learning Management System) which will be foundational to the 1:1 program in 2017-18.
    • Acquire devices:
      • Orders will occur mid school year (each student/family will purchase and own his device via CovCath’s purchase portal). Students who will be 9th, 10th or 11th graders in 2017-18 will be required to purchase a device.
      • Devices will be delivered with required software once the student and parent have attended training (tentatively: February through April) and signed a Usage Agreement.
      • All details of the acquisition process (including costs and financial assistance) and student device ownership/responsibility are provided in the attachment.

1:1 Program Leadership

CCH Technology Director Mr. Bob Lind will be aided by Mrs. Monica Wainscott (parent with experience implementing a similar program at another school) and Mr. Gaby Batshoun (parent, CCH School Board Member, and President of Global Business Solutions). Both Mrs. Wainscott and Mr. Batshoun will act as consultants for the 1:1 program transition at CCH.

CCH administration, with oversight advice from the Technology Committee and the School Board, will continue to own the overall program success.

What is a 1:1 Program?

In the context of education, one-to-one computing ("1:1") refers to schools where each student has a portable electronic device in order to access the Internet, digital course materials and digital textbooks, and often to perform and submit assignments.

What are the educational benefits of a 1:1 program?

One-to-one computing offers benefits to the educational process in many ways, including: efficient and equal access to extensive information and learning resources; provides creative opportunities and efficiencies in assignments; develops skills in the usage of technology that are required in college and the workplace, etc. We will also measure the impact on test scores, as some studies have shown progress in specific subjects, especially in writing/verbal scores.

Why is the program mandatory versus being tied to certain elective courses?

In this program, technology is a tool versus a subject in and of itself. It is expected to enable research, collaboration, creativity, communication, and evaluation of learning across subject areas. In fact, some of the most compelling studies illustrating improved test scores from use of 1:1 technology came in “verbal” areas.

How will teachers be trained to integrate the technology?

Our teachers have been growing in their classroom technology over several years. Every one of them has had a tablet device since 2015-16. They are receiving specific training on curriculum integration ideas, opportunities and techniques. We will support professional development opportunities that enhance their abilities and plans for further integration. Finally, we will monitor the effective classroom usage via measuring the incorporation of technology in lesson plans, through normal classroom observations, and via monitoring impact to test scores.

Who is required to puchase a device?

Every 9th and 10th grade student (in 2016-17), plus current 8th graders who attend Covington Catholic, will be required to purchase the selected device for the 2017-18 year. This device will be utilized by him throughout his years at Covington Catholic, and is his property for that time as well as following graduation.

Why 1:1 and a mandated device versus "Bring Your Own Device"?

The Technology Committee carefully considered many options for our program. 1:1 was chosen to provide consistency and compatibility across devices and applications.

Acquiring a Device

Why does parent/student have to purchase the device?

There are significant advantages to having all students (and teachers) on common devices, with beneficial educational outcomes that outweigh the costs to each student. By purchasing the device, there is more responsibility and accountability on the student to protect and maintain this asset that is his property.

The device will be the property of the student (and his family / the purchaser). He/they as owners of the device are responsible for all maintenance and repairs. CCH will facilitate sending a device for repair at a student's/parent's request.

Who provides the devices?

Global Business Services will provide the devices. GBS will provide a bulk purchase price that is an exceptional value.

Each device will have consistent imaging / setup work completed (including mandatory cybersecurity software, etc.) before it is released to the student purchaser.

GBS will provide support and opportunities such as financing and insurance options because of their overall role as the provider.

Instructions on when and how to purchase the device are listed separately.

When does my student need to purchase / have the device?

Each family must purchase a device for each student (8th, 9th, and 10th graders in 2016-17) for mandatory usage in the 2017-18 year via the online portal provided by the CCH device vendor (a device purchase is optional for 2016-17 11th graders who will be seniors in 2017-18). The order/purchase window will be open Nov. 6, 2016 - May 15, 2017.

The devices will be delivered to CovCath once received and imaging / software loading is completed. Monthly dates will be offered when the student and a parent can come to CovCath to receive some basic training and pick up his device. The device will not be released until this training is completed and a signed Usage Agreement is received by CovCath.

Is there financial assistance for this purchase?

Yes.

Any student who receives tuition assistance will be eligible for additional device purchase assistance.

If a student does not receive tuition assistance, the vendor will be providing financing options for the purchase of the device.

Ordering Process & Portal

The 1:1 ordering portal for your son’s device is now open.

Ordering Portal Link

Each student/family will be provided the information (unique student code and school code) you will need to place your order. All students currently in grades 8 – 10 (juniors and seniors optional) need to purchase a device for mandatory usage during the 2017-18 school year.

All devices must be purchased through our online purchasing portal supplied by Global Business Solutions (GBS). There is also the option of ordering additional accessories on the portal, or you may purchase your own accessories. The portal will be open until May 15, 2017; acceptance of an online acceptable usage policy will be required before purchase may be finalized. Devices will be delivered to Covington Catholic with monthly pickup dates communicated as the devices are delivered.

The first 100 orders before Thanksgiving will be delivered before Christmas (mid-December pickup date to be sent at a later date). Students may begin to bring their devices to use at CCH (at discretion of the teachers) once they have received them.

We will deliver a 1:1 program that is second to none and will support the high academic standards that you have come to expect from Covington Catholic High School.
