BLUE NOTES

The Weekly e-newsletter for Covington Catholic Parents

ENJOY YOUR DAY OFF

CCH will not have school this Friday due to an Diocesan In-Service Day.  The football team will travel to Pendleton County for the Friday night game and the Soccer team will be traveling to Ashland to play Paul Blazer.

By the way, the Spirit Shop will not be open on Friday due to the fact that we have in-service and no classes that day and it will not be open Friday, October 7 because of Super Hike. Plan to stop by Thursday for your spirit wear

CONGRATULATIONS GOLF TEAM: 7th REGION CHAMPIONS

After a lot of rain, and a long day on the golf course the Colonels as they won the 7th Region Tournament by shooting a score of 300. The Colonels beat Ryle who came in second with a 308, to become back to back winners of the 7th Region. In fact, this is the 37th year the CCH Golf program has brought home this honor.  On the individual side of the tournament, the Colonels took the top three individual spots with a tie at the top of the leader board. Austin Beck and Seattle Stein had to battle it out on a 1 hole playoff after both Colonels shot a 74 on the day. After the playoff, Austin became the 7th Region Individual Champion with Seattle finishing as the 7th Region Runner-up. Brett Bauereis was close behind by shooting a third place 75 on the day.  Merik Berling and Sean Kiely posted a 77 and 81 to round out the five man team.  The three golf coaches agree that this honor is a result of the entire 19 man team who have played well over 40 matches since school started and dominated the golf courses. At the recent CCH Invitational, another coach commented that even our 19th man would be a starter on his team, further demonstrating the depth of this group of players.

This was truly a big day for Colonel Golf as we collectively took home 3 of the 4 trophies and left our mark again on the 7th Region.  Next up for the Colonels will be the State Tournament that is being held beginning next Monday-Wednesday in Bowling Green

MAX WILLIAMSON PLACES IN FIRST INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

Coach Dickmann would like to congratulate Junior AquaColonel Max Williamson for his achievements in Osaka Japan last week.  Today is the first day back to school for Max since leaving for Japan to compete as a member of the NCSA Junior National Swim Team.  Max had awesome swims in the 200 and 400 Individual Medleys, placing second and third respectively.  Coach Dickmann has displayed Max's awards and pictures in the main trophy case today and tomorrow for all to see.  Again, congratulations to Max on his first international competition.  Max is also a member of the USA Junior National Team and will wear our nations colors next year in Luxemburg.

SUPER HIKE IS A LONG STANDING CCH TRADITION

All students will be participating in SuperHike 2011, a 6 mile hike on Friday October 7th.  Students should report to school at regular time (7:50 a.m.) and will be dismissed when the Hike is completed,  Freshmen will be the last class to begin the hike.  Last year, everyone was finished between 11:00 and 11:30.

Students will be given a SuperHike t-shirt (winning design shirt front by senior, Mitchell Dehlinger and back by faculty member Craig Cleveland) and they are allowed to wear sweatshirts, sweatpants or shorts, preferably CCH spiritwear.

The purpose of SuperHike is to raise money for operating costs not covered by tuition, as well as social events held by the Student Senate and NHS.  Each student is responsible for collecting a minimum of $30  or $50 per family.

Healthy Relationships program on Tuesday, October 4th

Diocesan Policy requires all schools in the diocese to offer students a safe environment education and training component on a bi-annual basis.  Next week our students will hear a presentation from the Women’s Crisis Center, titled “Healthy Relationships,” which  will present information regarding power based personal violence (interpersonal violence, bullying, stalking, child abuse, sexual assault). The students will learn how to identify red flag behavior and safely intervene as proactive bystanders.  Any parent wishing to withhold their son from this presentation may do so by completing an “Opt-Out” form, available from Mr. Flesch, prior to that date.  Any parent wishing to attend this presentation is also invited to do so, with advance notice to Mr. Flesch so as to arrange for appropriate seating.

OUR PARENTS (& STUDENTS) ARE OUR BEST RECRUITERS

With just 5 weeks left until our Open House for prospective students, you will begin to see the new marketing campaign at work!  Last week a full page article accompanied a full page ad in the Recorder's Private School Directory that went to 90,000 homes, and a half page ad was in the Cincinnati Magazine's October issue as we attempt to break into the competitive Cincinnati market as an alternative to the bigger (and much more expensive) GCL all-male schools.

Our yard signs and car magnets will be arriving in the next 2 weeks and we are in need of YOUR help! To get the maximum exposure for our small yard signs, we'd like to put these at the top of the main street in subdivisions as opposed to say having 5 signs within a cul-de-sac. While we still want to have one or more signs in each big subdivision in our feeder parishes, we are especially in need of our families in Boone and Campbell Counties, and Cincinnati to help us spread the word about the Open House. Can you help us out by taking some signs and putting them up (and taking down) at key intersections, good site locations, and your yard? These will be sent home on Oct 7th for all families that respond to our call.

The large 4' x 8' signs that have become our trademark, will also go up the two weeks before Open House and these are especially effective on major roads. With another very cool design on this year's sign, please consider letting one of these go up on  property you have access to on busy roadways and intersections. We have a crew that will install and remove the big signs for you.

The idea of the magnets is not to have all of our junior and senior cars that sit in the lot all day have them, but to get them on busy mom's and dad's cars that are on the road during the day, or driving home in rush hour traffic. If you are willing to put a 5" x 7" magnet on your car to promote the open house, please indicate so on the online form.  It has been designed so that the date can be cut off after Nov 6 and you have a very cool colonel magnet for helping us out.

Finally, we ask that you help us reach students that are not receiving our admission event information from the feeder grade schools. Students outside of these 5 parishes must contact CCH to be added to our mailing list by either calling the school or joining the mailing list online. Parents willing to pass along event invitations to neighbors and parents at their son's grade school, are a tremendous help to helping us spread the word.

Please complete this checklist form, and let us know how you can help spread the word of why Covington Catholic is Worth It!!  (signs, magnets, handouts, etc)

You as a parent making the sacrifices to send your son to CovCath, are more effective than any magazine ad or brochure can be.  Share your enthusiasm for CCH with other families you know looking for the best high school for their son!

8th GRADE PREVIEW TO THE BLUE POSTPONED

CHAMBER CHOIR CD FUNDS MARIA SCHAFFSTEIN SCHOLARSHIP

We need members who will be dedicated to investigating and evaluating agencies worthy of the money.  All interested students, please see Mr. Andolina in Room 114. PRO-LIFE CLUB -1st Saturday Walk

The PRO-LIFE Club members will WALK FOR LIFE this Saturday. We leave from CovCath's parking lot at 7:30am. Please turn in your PRO-LIFE CLUB Parental Consent Form . We need these on file.  If you will need a ride, see Mr. Andolina.

These students require private transportation. Some of the students know the way to Holy Name Church on 2448 Auburn Ave, Cincinnati, OHIO. When they go directly there, they are not the responsibility of Covington Catholic while traveling back and forth. However, for those who meet at 7:30 am prior to the service in Covington Catholic’s parking lot (these are students who need transportation, don’t know the way, or who are providing transportation for others) we need a consent form signed by you. In order to cover all potential students for the WALK, we are requesting all PRO-LIFE Club members’ parents to sign this consent form. Also, should a non-member want to WALK, his parent will need to sign the consent form prior to the WALK. A signed consent form for the student will cover the student for the entire school year unless you request otherwise.

We encourage you to WALK with your son. This is a wonderful way to demonstrate our support of LIFE, save the lives of our babies, and to bring an end to abortion in this country.

PRO-LIFE Club would like to thank all who have supported the WASH FOR LIFE on Sunday September 26th. The students (both Notre Dame and Covcath) washed cars from 11:00am to 4:30pm and earned $1200. Your generosity was overwhelming. We have added $200 to this amount from the PRO-LIFE Club and will be sending the Diocese a check in the amount of $1400. This money will be donated to agencies who are working to support life.

COLONEL CASH EXPLOSION IS COMING!

Just 56 days until the drawing of the Colonel Cash Explosion Split the Pot raffle!  Last year's pot got up to $58,000.... can we double it this year???

Letters were mailed to alumni and past supporters last Friday and after two days of mail, our pot is already up to $3,240!  The students will receive their tickets next week.  If someone approaches them about purchasing a ticket, have the student tell them they will get back to them once they receive their chances, or they can buy online and give the student credit on the purchase form.

This year's raffle will again feature the most sought after prize of the year.... a ride on Big Blue to Chipotle for lunch! The boys had a great time doing this last year and the boys that missed out, are sure to want to go this year.  All students that sell 10 chances qualify for the free lunch.  There are several new incentives that will be revealed to the boys next week.

Proceeds from the school's share of the split the pot, will once again benefit the Technology Fund, in particular the updating of the Language Lab with all new computers and software licenses.
