SENIOR JAMES NUTTER - NATIONAL MERIT SEMI-FINALIST  Senior James Michael Nutter was named National Merit Semi-Finalist by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Jim is among less than 1% of high school students nationally who qualify for this honor.
Jim is an Honors and AP student, who has excelled in Math and Science courses, receiving a perfect 36 score on his Math ACT and 800 on the Math SAT. He also received top scores in the National Science Foundation tests, was named academic team MVP, and is a runner on the Cross Country Team and a trumpet player in the band. He hopes to attend the University of Louisville in an accelerated engineering program, with the intention of earning a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Of the 1.5 million students who took the PSAT, Jim is among the 16,000 top scoring students in critical reading, math and writing skills. He will now advance to the next round. In February, he will find out if he is a finalist, which would make him eligible to compete for some 8,500 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $34 million. About 90 percent of the semi-finalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will be selected as Merit Scholarship winners, earning the Merit Scholar title. NATIONAL MERIT COMMENDED STUDENTS ANNOUNCED Covington Catholic is also proud to announce that five seniors have been named “Commended Students” by the National Merit Program. Tanner Coyne-Chailland, Ian Dollenmeyer, Michael Maurer, Austin Schroeder, and Kurt Wittmer placed in the top 5% of students who took the exam. The PSAT test that will determine NEXT year's National Merit Scholars, will be administered on campus to all sophomores and juniors next Wednesday, October 12th. Please encourage your son to be well rested and perhaps to work through some of the workbooks and study guides that we have provided links to in the past Blue Notes.  GOLF TEAM FINISHES 10th in STATE FINALS
This year's golf team set two goals at the beginning of the season. 1 - Repeat the win of being Regional Champs and 2- make the cut to the 2nd day of the State Tournament. This young team accomplished both! Today, the Colonel Golfers placed 10th out of 24 teams playing in the State Tournament finals! The team was lead by low scorer, Sophomore Merik Berling with 160 for the two days, then Senior Seattle Stein with a 163, Junior Austin Beck - 165, Senior Sean Kiely-170 and Sophomore Brett Bauereis at 176. We congratulate these players for representing the school so well at the state level! They have played a very full two months of golf and deserve this accomplishment! Can't wait to see what they will do next year when they set their minds to it!
 SCHOOL WELCOMES BIG BLUE 3
Through a gift from the Booster Association, the school purchased a school bus although it was in need of many repairs. With the generosity of the Mark Knipper family, the bus has been restored to 'like new' condition even including LED lighting and a stereo surround sound system! Read all about how this project came about.... SUPER HIKE IS A LONG STANDING CCH TRADITION This Friday the students will be walking 6 miles to raise money for their school. They should report to school at regular time (7:50 a.m.) and will be dismissed when the Hike is completed, Freshmen will be the last class to begin the hike. Last year, everyone was finished between 11:00 and 11:30. Students will be given a SuperHike t-shirt (winning design shirt front by senior, Mitchell Dehlinger and back by faculty member Craig Cleveland) and they are allowed to wear sweatshirts, sweatpants or shorts, preferably CCH spiritwear. Money that was pledged for Super Hike should be turned in to the homeroom teacher. END OF THE QUARTER - NEXT FRIDAY Wow, is this year flying by! Next Friday (date has been changed from Thursday) will be the end of the first quarter! Please encourage your son to meet with his teacher if he has any concerns about his grade or whether he needs to switch classes for next quarter. Class changes should be made through their guidance counselor before the start of the new grading period. IMPORTANT NOTICES:
The end of the first quarter is October 14th. As is stated in the Policy paper included in the packet received on Parent Night in August, any student owing $10 or more to the Cafeteria at the end of the quarter will not receive their report card until their account is current. Any money sent in during that time, will be deposited in the account to bring the account current, before it can be used to purchase lunch or ala carte items. Email statements are sent to those parents whose son has a NEGATIVE balance in their lunch account twice weekly (Tuesday and Friday). If you do not receive a statement, the lunch account is current.
As a reminder, please ensure that your tuition accounts are current prior to the end of the first quarter. A letter went out from the finance office last week for those account holders that are at least two payments behind. The school’s policy is that if your tuition account is at least two payments behind as of the first quarter, the school will hold the report card for that account.  CCH/NDA STUDENTS PERFORM "OUR TOWN"
Notre Dame Academy and Covington Catholic High School, proudly present Our Town. Talented students from these two schools will perform this classic at Notre Dame Academy on Thursday October 13, Friday October 14 and Saturday October 15 all starting at 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. The box office is open at NDA on Wednesdays from 4:30 -6:30 or you can email tixs4panda@aol.com for further ticket information. ACADEMIC AWARDS START TO ROLL IN Congratulations to Senior Eric Torres who was recognized for his superior writing talent by the NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English). He submitted two writing pieces last year as a junior and was selected as one of the top three in Kentucky. HOMECOMING TICKETS GO ON SALE STARTING MONDAY The CCH Homecoming Dance will be held at the Gym on Friday, October 22nd. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors are invited to attend. Tickets will be available to be purchased from Mrs. Rasp in Room 203 before and after school and during lunch starting on Monday for $20 per couple. (Please do not disturb her classes to purchase tickets.) Students may attend stag for $10. This year's theme is "Colonels Light Up The Night." FRESHMAN HALLOWEEN BASH All freshmen are invited to attend the CCH/NDA Freshmen Halloween Bash. It will be held on October 28th at CCH in the gym. Students are encouraged to dress in costume. Tickets will go on sale Monday October 17th for $5 in Mr. Barczak's office.  NEW ADMISSIONS VIDEO TO BE PRODUCED
Next Monday, we will begin the taping of an admissions video being produced for the website. Once again, we ask that if you are uncomfortable with your son possibly participating in this, to please advise him to remove himself from the areas where the videographer will be. Our yard signs and car magnets will be arriving next week and we have only had about 50 families respond that they can display signs and magnets to help us promote the Open House. To get the maximum exposure for our small yard signs, we'd like to put these at the top of the main street in subdivisions as opposed to say having 5 signs within a cul-de-sac. While we still want to have one or more signs in each big subdivision in our feeder parishes, we are especially in need of our families in Boone and Campbell Counties, and Cincinnati to help us spread the word about the Open House. Can you help us out by taking some signs and putting them up (and taking down) at key intersections, good site locations, and your yard? The large 4' x 8' signs that have become our trademark, will also go up the two weeks before Open House and these are especially effective on major roads. With another very cool design on this year's sign, please consider letting one of these go up on property you have access to on busy roadways and intersections. We have a crew that will install and remove the big signs for you. The idea of the magnets is not to have all of our junior and senior cars that sit in the lot all day have them, but to get them on busy moms' and dads' cars that are on the road during the day, or driving home in rush hour traffic. If you are willing to put a 5" x 7" magnet on your car to promote the open house, please indicate so on the online form. It has been designed so that the date can be cut off after Nov 6 and you have a very cool colonel magnet for helping us out. Finally, we ask that you help us reach students that are not receiving our admission event information from the feeder grade schools. Students outside of these 5 parishes must contact CCH to be added to our mailing list by either calling the school or joining the mailing list online. Parents willing to pass along event invitations to neighbors and parents at their son's grade school, are a tremendous help to helping us spread the word. Senior Soccer Sensation, Sean Cooney recorded his 17th and 18th assists of the season on Saturday to tie the record for most assists in a season. Come see Sean attempt to break the all-time school record at CCH Wooten Field this Thursday night when the undefeated team plays Boone County! This is also the Soccer Senior Night-- come cheer on this extra-ordinarily talented group of senior soccer players as they close out the regular season and lead the team closer to ther regional championship. LISTEN TO FRESHMAN FOOTBALL GAME TONIGHT ON CCH RADIO CCH Radio will be broadcasting the freshman Colonels vs the Highland Bluebirds tonight at 6:00. Be sure to listen in as our Colonels take down the baby birds. If you missed the game, you can listen to the archived broadcast. SIGN UP FOR ULTIMATE FRISBEE The 2011 Fall Ultimate Frisbee Tournament will be held the week of Oct. 11th. Games are played each day and it is a double elimination tournament. You may have 7-10 players per team, and there is a $35 team fee. Sign-ups are in the Art Room until Friday. GRAPHIC DESIGN CLUB MEETING All members should bring their t-shirt designs with them to the meeting on Thursday morning at 7:20 in the Graphics Lab. ENGINEERING CLUB ANNOUNCES PROJECTS After much discussion, the projects with the top votes that the Club will work on this year, will be the construction of a catapult and a boat. Our next meeting will be Wed. Oct 19th at 7:15am. FIRST SKI CLUB MEETING The first meeting of the Colonel Ski Club will be Tuesday after school in Rm 312. Information about discount ski passes and great learn-to-ski packages will be available. You can learn to ski or snowboard without having to purchase equipment for less than $40 a visit when purchased as a package. If you have equipment, season passes start as low as $217 for once a week. All students are welcome and encouraged to join us, regardless of skill level! PHILANTHROPY CLUB - MANDATORY MEETING Our first meeting will be on Monday October 10th at 7:05 am in room 114. This is a critical meeting and requires full attendance. The 2011 Fall CCH Wiffleball Tourney will take place Friday October 7th immediately following SUPERHIKE. All students that are not playing, are invited to stay after the Hike to hang out and watch the teams play.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY CEREMONY POSTPONED The NHS ceremony has been postponed to November 15th at 7:00 pm. Acceptance letters will go out this week. WALK FOR LIFE THIS SATURDAY WALK FOR LIFE this Saturday Oct 8th. We invite all varsity football players to WALK with us. Wear your game jerseys on this WALK and let everyone know that our football team is fighting for the life of our babies. It is a bye week and it is time for our PRO-LIFE Club members to give their TWO FEET. Please join us this Saturday. We leave for St. Avila Church in Price Hill at 7:45am. Coach "A" CROSS COUNTRY TEAM WINS DIOCESE CHAMPIONSHIP Yesterday, the cross country team had a great performance at the Diocese of Covington Championship at AJ Jolly Park. The Varsity team claimed the team championship. The Colonels put together a total team effort to take out Class A #1 St. Henry by a close score of 38-45. Top CovCath finishers included Brayden Schlagbaum in 4th, Christian Greenwell in 7th, Alex Flynn in 8th, Brian Menke in 9th, and Grant Guenther in 14th. The JV team also won the team championship, besting St. Henry by a tight margin of 29-34. Tyler Micek led the way for the Colonels in running to the individual championship. He was followed by Ryan Panoushek in 3rd, Bradley Couch in 6th, Chris Gruner in 8th, and Eric Schieman in 11th. CovCath also placed seven runners in the top 10 in the open race led by Jake Zimmerman's 2nd place finish. Congratulations to the team on an impressive showing!  COLONEL CASH EXPLOSION OFF TO A GREAT START!

The next Cov Cath alumni social is tonight, Wednesday, October 12 at 7 pm in the Griffin Alumni Centre. Mr. Al Hertsenberg, Religion Department Chair and the head JV soccer coach, will provide an update on the Religion Department's activities and introduce the coaching staff of the soccer team, which is ranked #20 in the nation. The alumni social is open to all CovCath alumni to reconnect and renew friendships. Bring a fellow alumnus with you. If you have any questions, you can contact the new Alumni Association. HULLABALOO IN NEED OF COMMITTEE MEMBERS & DONATIONS The Booster Association's Colonel Blue Hullabaloo is open to all parents willing to help put this fun event together! Decorations, auction items, invitations, etc. are all in need of volunteers to help. There will be a meeting Wednesday October 5th at 7:00 p.m. in the Griffin Centre conference room. Please join us!  CCH SPIRIT SHOP
The Shop is open on days when school is in session from 11:30-1:00, Fridays (with the exception of Friday, Oct. 7) from 2:30-4:30, and during all home football games or visit the online shop, pay by credit card, and have your son pick it up in the office or have it shipped. Not all new items are online.
