Juniors & Seniors

Please keep any scholarship offer letters (including those he will not accept) your son receives; the Guidance Office will document the information for recognition at the senior baccalaureate luncheon. Details will be shared through Counselor's Corner notices about when we will begin collecting scholarship information.

This site is updated on a rolling basis. Please check the Scholarship Bulletin periodically for new scholarships and updates to currently listed scholarships. Scholarships are organized by due date. The Scholarship Bulletin can be accessed through your Naviance account.

• Decide where you want to apply. (utilize Naviance and college search websites, visit different campuses, talk with your parents)
• Make sure your ACT or SAT scores are sent to the colleges where you are applying as well as to the high school. Students playing collegiate sports should send their scores to the NCAA Clearinghouse as well. (The CovCath code is 180-535)

• Apply online through the college website or the Common Application (if applicable for that school)

• Online: complete the application, pay the fee, print any counselor or teacher forms and bring them to the appropriate party. As soon as you have submitted your application and paid the fee, request your transcript and any teacher letters of recommendation in your Naviance account.

a.       Remember, all college application transcript requests must be entered in Naviance.  You will not have a complete application without a transcript. 

b.      If requesting a teacher letter of recommendation, be sure to ask them prior to submitting the request in Naviance. 

c.       Transcript and letter requests should be submitted at least two weeks in advance of a deadline.

• Request a transcript from the counselor via Naviance. REMEMBER: You have not applied anywhere without requesting a transcript! 
• If submitting letters of recommendation, take a copy of your brag sheet to each teacher and give them at least two weeks to complete the letters. Be certain to thank your teachers for their willingness to write a letter of recommendation on your behalf.
• If you intend to play a Division I or II sport in college, you must register with the NCAA Clearinghouse by visiting http://www.eligbilitycenter.org. You must then request your transcript be sent to the NCAA. See a counselor to obtain an Athletic Transcript Release form, if one is not on file already.
• Watch your deadlines!!! A deadline calendar is located in Naviance.

College Applications

Students can apply to over 900 participating colleges using the Common Application as an alternative to using a specific college's application. Some colleges will request supplemental materials in addition to the basic application. Read all instructions carefully!

Once you've signed your FERPA waiver in the Common App, do not forget to match your Common App account in Naviance. CCH cannot send any materials on your behalf until your accounts are matched.

College Application Essays

The essay is an important component of many college applications. Some colleges place a tremendous amount of weight in a student's writing ability, and it is important to prepare a well-written and thoughtful essay. Be sure to write a rough draft of your essay, and have a faculty member or trusted adult proofread your work.

Researching Options for College

Students planning to attend a college or university have several factors to consider when conducting his college search:

• College Size--Large student population vs. Small student population (consider student/teacher ratio per class)
• Distance From Home--consider hours of drive or fly time, ability to return home on weekends, etc.
• Program of Study--Research schools with strong reputations in the program of study
• Cost--In-State vs. Out-of-State tuition, opportunity for scholarships or financial aid, etc.

Fortunately, there are many resources available to assist the student and his parents in making this life changing decision. We encourage you to be proactive and investigate as many of these options are possible as you determine the best college choice for you.

Community Colleges and Technical Schools

Students who do not plan to attend a 4-year college after high school have several options for 2-year programs and technical schools. Below are the websites for schools and programs in or near the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati area.

Keep in mind, the community and technical schools are partnered schools. Students on these campuses have the opportunity to receive all the same perks as students in the partnered university and courses will transfer to a partnered school. Also, tuition is typically less at the Community & Technical schools. Do NOT discount the benefits of attending a Community & Technical school!

Jr/Sr Counselor's Corner Archive

The Couselor's Corner is a periodic e-mail bulletin that contains notices regarding upcoming events at CCH, tips on the college search and application process, and guidance toward locating and securing financial aid. The same information is also shared with students via Naviance, and all Jr/Sr Counselor's Corners are archived in Naviance.

Seniors are allowed 2 college visits during the school year before receiving an excused absence. Complete a College Visit Request Form at least one week prior to the scheduled visit and turn it into the Guidance Office. It is recommended that you contact the college at least 2 weeks in advance of your visit; be advised that session attendance may be capped by the college so plan and register ahead.

You can arrange many college visits online, or you can also call the college admission office to schedule an official visit. It is very important to visit at least once before committing to a college.

COLLEGE VISIT REQUEST FORM

Students who plan to attend college after high school must take the ACT and/or SAT Reasoning Test. It is recommended that juniors take BOTH the ACT and SAT Reasoning Test at least once before the end of junior year. Once your son reviews the results of both tests, he can focus on preparing for the test on which he performed best.

Remember: When registering for the ACT or SAT, you must send your scores to Covington Catholic High School. The code is 180-535.

Most colleges accept either the ACT or SAT and will utilize the ACT/SAT concordance chart to determine how well students perform on both tests. Regardless of the number of times students take the ACT or SAT, most colleges will consider the highest score only.

The ACT

The ACT is administered at various schools in NKy such as Notre Dame Academy, Thomas More College, Dixie Heights, and most public high schools. Visit the ACT website to register online and for test dates and locations.

The SAT

Covington Catholic High School juniors have the opportunity to take the PSAT. The PSAT is a standardized test that helps predict how students will perform on the SAT and is also the qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The SAT is administered at various schools in Northern Kentucky. Visit the SAT website to register online and for test dates and locations.

 

KEES Money (Kentucky Educational Excellence Scholarship)

Students who earn a GPA of 2.5 or above any academic year of high school can earn scholarships for college or technical school in Kentucky.

For more information or to access a student's account, visit the KEES website. It is important that each student checks his KEES account annually to ensure the award amount is accurate.

Financial Aid

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be available on October 1st. It should be completed as soon as possible because the allotted federal funds are available on a first come, first served basis. The preferred method of completing the FAFSA form is online: http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Most colleges and universities will not award any type of scholarship unless a FAFSA application has been submitted. It is imperative, no matter your expected level of financial aid, that every student submit a FAFSA application.

Note: Many schools will not distribute financial aid until a student registers with the Selective Service (www.sss.gov).
