Academic Support

The Academic Support Program is designed to facilitate student success in our high school setting through the development and reinforcement of necessary academic skills.

During the 2007-2008 school year, the Academic Support Program at Covington Catholic High School was awarded the Sister Dorothy Inclusive Education Award by the Diocese of Covington Department of Catholic Schools for accommodating children with special needs.

Admission Requirements  

  • Students are evaluated using the Diocesan High School Placement Test results
  • Students can also be recommended by their previous school or by a private evaluator.
  • If a private evaluator recommends the placement, CCHS must be given all evaluation reports and pertinent information.
  • The student’s records will be evaluated by an interdisciplinary team of Covington Catholic counselors, administrators, and academic support instructors to determine admission into the program.

Program Structure

Enrollment in the program is limited in order to ensure that each student receives proper support.  The program is designed to help students succeed by providing them with modifications for and reinforcement of their regular classroom instruction.

Students enrolled in the program meet in a class with the academic support instructor one period a day, five days per week.  The class is designed to allow the academic support instructor to work with the students individually and in small groups.  As such, the size of each individual class is dictated by the similarity of student needs and class schedules but overall is much smaller than that of a traditional classroom.

The academic support program is a half-credit class.

Role of the Academic Support Instructor

The academic support instructor is the case manager for each student, the liaison to the rest of the professional staff, and the student’s advocate.  The ASP instructor strives to foster acceptance of varied testing procedures, maintain a professional empathy with the student, uphold the level of the classroom teachers’ expectations, and improve the organizational and coping skills of each student.

Role of the Student

The student is expected to put forth his best effort in all subjects and complete all assignments to the best of his ability.  The student must understand that the academic support class is not a study hall but a venue to improve his skills.  Therefore, he is expected to complete his homework at home in order to be successful in the program.

Role of the Parents

Parents are to work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team in order to help their son cope in the high school setting.  Parents are asked to keep in contact with the academic support instructor and with their son’s classroom teachers and counselor.
