The CCH baseball program is regarded as one of the strongest in the tri-state. The team competes at the Freshmen, JV and Varsity levels, which play in the spring of the school year. Tryouts for all three teams are held in February each year, with the season playing through May, ending with state championship competition in June. "Cuts" are necessary to limit the roster to the KHSAA stated maximum. Student athletes are also expected to participate in the off-season conditioning program as directed by the head coach.
Varsity Head Coach: John Michels (Class of 1988)
Coach Michels has served in multiple roles within the CovCath Baseball program over the years, most recently as the junior varsity head coach—a role in which he compiled a remarkable 408-144 record, winning six regional championships and reaching the finals 12 times. As freshman head coach from 2002–2004, he added another regional title and a 48-13 record to his résumé.
A former Colonel standout himself, Michels played on the 1987 regional championship team that advanced to the state quarterfinals. To the program, Coach Michels brings a reputation for excellence, discipline, and unwavering commitment to Covington Catholic’s mission. His success has been rooted not only in his coaching record, but in his ability to cultivate a culture of hard work, unity, and high standards—on and off the field.
